GAINESVILLE, Florida - The North Texas softball team completes its regular-season slate at the Florida Tournament with three games scheduled against No. 1 Florida and one against Florida A&M.
Games are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Katie Seashole Pressley Stadium on the campus of Florida.
Despite dropping the series to Louisiana Tech, the Mean Green punched their ticket to the Conference USA tournament in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, which begins on May 10. North Texas (11-13 C-USA) will enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed. North Texas was predicted to finish 12th in the conference’s preseason poll.
Senior Kelli Schkade remains the table setter for the North Texas offense with a .351 average, and freshmen Camille Grahmann and Nicole Ochotnicki have been heating up lately for the Mean Green. The duo combined for seven hits and a .472 average in the series against LA Tech.
Florida was voted the No. 1 team in the country for the fourth-straight week, and boasts the nation’s lowest earned-run average (0.75). Its offense is no slouch either, hitting at combined .309 on the season.
Florida A&M owns a record of 18-27-1, but is 13-2 in MEAC Conference play. The squad has two players hitting over .300 and one over the .400 plateau.
This will be the first-ever meeting between North Texas and each of the other two squads. Both the Gators and FAMU made the NCAA tournament last season. The Mean Green are 5-5 against teams that made the tournament last season.
Friday’s game against top-ranked Florida marks the second time in program history that the North Texas softball team will play the No. 1 team in the country. North Texas played No. 1 Oklahoma in the 2013 season.
First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the Mean Green face the Gators at noon and the Rattlers of FAMU at 3:30 p.m. before concluding the tournament on Sunday at noon against UF.
