DENTON, Texas (5/5/13) - The North Texas softball team earned a No. 4 seed in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Championship and will face the No. 5 seed, Florida Atlantic, in its first-round game on Wednesday, May 8 at 10 a.m. in Troy, Ala. The two teams will play the first game of the tournament.
The Mean Green received a No. 4 seed for the second straight year. North Texas finished its regular season with an overall record of 27-22 and a conference mark of 12-9. The 27 wins are tied for the third-most victories in school history, and the 12 victories are tied for the second-most conference wins compiled by a Mean Green softball team.
FAU is 27-27 overall and 10-12 in the conference. The Owls won their final two games against FIU to move into the fifth-place slot. NT won the conference series against the Owls, picking up two wins.
North Texas is playing in its ninth conference tournament. The top eight teams advance to the double-elimination conference tournament. Western Kentucky earned its first-ever Sun Belt Conference softball championship by winning the 2013 regular season.
NT is 4-4 in opening round conference tournament games and 12-16 overall in the tournament. The Mean Green is 12-12 in the all-time series against FAU and 3-0 in the conference tournament. The winner of the game between the Mean Green and the Owls will play either WKU or Louisiana-Monroe on Thursday, May 9 at 3 p.m.
The 2013 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship will be played at the Trojan Softball Complex in Troy, Ala., hosted by Troy University. The championship game will be played at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, and will be televised live on ESPN3.com and CSS/CST.
