DENTON, Texas (4/29/13) -- Junior pitcher Ashley Kirk was named Sun Belt Conference pitcher of the week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
After leading North Texas to a conference series sweep against Louisiana-Monroe, Kirk received the weekly honor for the second time this season. Kirk has received this honor four times in her career.
Ashley Kirk (13-8) won all three games against ULM this past weekend. Two of her three wins were no-hitters. In the opening 8-0 run-rule win, Kirk pitched five innings and allowed just two walks. She struck out six. In the second game of the doubleheader, Kirk pitched 1.1 innings of relief as North Texas came back in the sixth inning to win. The junior recorded a second no-hitter in the third game, pitching five innings and allowing one walk in the 8-0 victory.
In the three games this weekend, the junior pitched 11.1 innings of no-hit ball. She struck out 16 batters, walked three and had only one wild pitch. Kirk has now struck out 152 batters this season, placing her third on NT’s single-season list. She already holds the top two spots. She needs 12 more strikeouts to break her own single-season record. The right-hander set the career strikeout record at North Texas two weeks ago.
North Texas (25-22, 12-9) has two non-conference games left on its schedule before heading to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on May 8-11. The Mean Green faces UTA on Tuesday, April 30 at 4 p.m.
