Game Notes l Live Stats
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The North Texas softball team opens a three-game Conference USA series against the UAB Blazers with a doubleheader on Friday at Mary Bowers Field. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
North Texas (21-18, 8-7 C-USA) owns a three-game advantage over UAB (13-26, 5-7) in C-USA’s West bracket after taking two of three from Southern Miss last weekend, while Louisiana Tech swept the Blazers.
A series win puts the Mean Green is a solid position in the West’s standings with less than a month until the conference tournament in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, but a series loss would add pressure down the stretch, as they have a bye week on the last weekend of C-USA play.
North Texas senior infielder Kelli Schkade is on the verge of adding herself into elite company. She has tallied 16 stolen bases this season, just two shy of setting the program’s single-season record, and is on the outside looking in for multi-hit games in a career. The Albany, Texas, native has tallied 44 in her three seasons, three shy of Dani Hoff's fifth-best mark of 47.
In conference play, the three members of the Mean Green have averages north of .300, led by Schkade’s mark of .381. She also paces the team with 17 runs scored. Freshman Hanna Rebar leads the team with 10 RBI in conference action after tallying five RBI in the Southern Miss series.
Senior ace Stacey Underwood has thrown the bulk of the innings in conference action, leading the staff with 54.1 innings pitched. She has tossed five complete games and has struck out 27 batters opposed to 11 walks. Senior Jessica Elder holds North Texas’ lowest earned-run average (2.74).
UAB maintains the No. 3 seed in the West, but UTSA is chipping away, sitting only a game and a half behind the Blazers. The squad is 2-4 at home in conference play.
Analyse Petree paces the offense in average (.287) and doubles (seven), while Joanna Fallen leads the team in slugging percentage at .424.
In the circle, freshman lefty Claire Blount sits atop the rotation with a 3.00 ERA. She has tallied 96 strikeouts in 119 innings pitched and leads the team with six wins.
A season ago, North Texas took two of three from UAB in Denton, marking the first series victory over UAB in program history.
