Mean Green Faces No. 3 Texas Tonight

DENTON, Texas (4/14/11) - The Mean Green returns to facing nationally-ranked opponents this week when it faces No. 3 Texas on the road on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. North Texas had one of its biggest wins last year when it defeated the Longhorns, 1-0, at home.

Texas (34-4) has lost only four games this season, including a 1-0 loss to Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday. North Texas is 3-9 this season against nationally-ranked opponents. It has picked up wins against ULL, Baylor and Missouri. The No. 3 ranking is the highest-ranked opponent that the Mean Green has faced this season. Texas leads the series, 7-1.

In the 1-0 win against Texas last year, Mariza Martinez made the play of the season with her over the fence catch, robbing the Longhorns of a home run. The Mean Green did not record a hit in the game but scored the lone run off a wild pitch.

In the last four games, North Texas (17-23) has posted 10 of its 11 runs in the last two innings. The Mean Green has outscored its opponents, 10-3, in the last two innings of those games. However, North Texas has been outscored 11-1 in the combined first five innings in the last four games.

In her last four appearances, Brittany Simmons has posted a 1-1 record and a 0.00 earned run average. She has given up no earned runs in 14.1 innings of work. Both of her two starts were complete games. Over the last four appearances, she has lowered her ERA from 3.40 to 3.08.

Mariza Martinez tied a school record in the 7-6 loss to FAU with five RBI. The five RBI in a single game ties a school record. Maddelyn Fraley knocked in five RBI against UTSA this season. Martinez is one of six North Texas players in school history to knock in five runs in a single game. In the 5-4 loss to FAU, Martinez did not record a hit, but she drew three walks. The three walks ties for second for most walks in a single game at North Texas. Martinez has accomplished this feat three times in her career.

With her three hits this past weekend, Mariza Martinez eclipsed the 200-hit plateau. The senior has now recorded 202 hits in her career, good for third place all-time. She is behind teammate Mallory Cantler (209) and Katya Muller, the career hits leader (222).
