DENTON – The North Texas softball team opens a pivotal stretch of Conference USA play this weekend, hosting the Southern Miss Golden Eagles for a three-game series beginning Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Mean Green (19-16, 6-6 C-USA) hold a two-game edge over the Golden Eagles (19-19, 4-8) in the West standings. A series win for North Texas would create some distance, but a series defeat adds pressure down the stretch as UAB, Florida Atlantic and Louisiana Tech remain on the schedule.

A positive is that the Mean Green are undefeated at home in conference play. North Texas has outscored opponents 33-16 in the six contests and has drawn 28 walks, helping the team to a .420 on-base percentage. In the circle, the staff owns a 2.05 earned-run average with three complete games and two shutouts.

Sophomore Harley Perella leads the team in average (.563), hits (nine) and RBI (eight) at home during conference play. Senior Stacey Underwood is 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA, while sophomore Lauren Craine is 2-0 with a 1.66 ERA.

Southern Miss boasts a 10-6 road mark this season, including a 3-3 record in conference road games. The squad is coming off a 4-3 loss to South Alabama on Wednesday.

Samantha Reynolds is the lone Golden Eagle with a batting average north of .300 (.357), but the staff has three pitchers with sub-3 ERA’s, paced by Kim Crowson’s 1.75 mark.

This is Alumni Weekend for North Texas, as several former players will be recognized for their contributions to the program before the games on Saturday. Susan Waters (2004-07), a 2016 North Texas Hall of Fame inductee, is among the honorees and will toss the ceremonial first pitch.

Additionally, Sunday is the inaugural Bark in the Park game. Fans will be allowed to bring their four-legged pals with them to the series finale starting at 1 p.m. Fans are limited to one dog per person and must show proof of vaccinations prior to entering the game.
