North Texas, UT-Arlington Renew Metroplex Rivalry Wednesday
The Mean Green Are 10-1 Against Texas Schools This Season
DENTON – The North Texas softball team will put its 10-1 record against Texas schools on the line Wednesday when the squad travels to UT-Arlington for a 6 p.m. contest with the Mavs.
North Texas (17-13, 6-3 Conference USA) swept UTSA last weekend, its second C-USA sweep of the season. The Mean Green’s RPI improved to No. 54 with the wins.
Sophomore Lauren Craine tossed a gem for North Texas in game two of the sweep over UTSA on Saturday, throwing a complete-game shutout, her second of the season, in the 1-0 victory. She limited the Roadrunners, who entered the contest hitting over .300, to a .250 clip. She was effective throughout, needing only 94 pitches in the victory.
Senior Danielle Gregory returned to the lineup after a hand injury kept her on the sidelines for four weeks. She collected one hit and played superb defense, throwing out three base runners trying for extra bases in the weekend series.
UTA holds a 17-15 mark, but dropped two of three to Georgia Southern over the weekend, moving it to 3-6 in Sun Belt play.
The Mavs have the third-best batting average in the Sun Belt (.287), while four players have averages over .300. As a staff, UTA holds a 3.20 earned-run average. Sam Clakley is the anchor atop the rotation with a 12-8 record with 11 complete games and a 2.00 earned-run average.
Last season, the squads played an extra-inning affair, with the Mean Green securing a 1-0 win in eight innings at Lovelace Stadium on a walk-off single by Harley Perella. North Texas leads the overall series, 13-6.
