DENTON — With the regular season series already in hand, the North Texas softball team seeks the regular season sweep of No. 19 Baylor, traveling to Waco for a midweek matchup on Wednesday night. The game will also be televised regionally on Fox Sports Plus with a first pitch set for 6 p.m.

North Texas (18-12) won both previous matchups this season in thrilling fashion, winning 7-5 in nine innings and 7-6 in eight innings on the way to the tournament championship at the Getterman Classic. Baylor (26-6) continues to lead the all-time series 15-8, but North Texas has won three of the last four meetings in the series dating back to last year.

“We were fortunate enough to get two wins off of them earlier in the year,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “They’re playing great ball and they’re playing with a lot of confidence, so it will be quite the challenge.”

North Texas back-ended a 2-1 series win at WKU, its first Conference USA series win of the season, handing the defending regular season and tournament champions their first C-USA series loss since joining the league for the 2015 season.

Junior shorstop Kelli Schkade earned Conference USA Co-Player of the Week honors, her second weekly award of the season, for her exceptional performance this past week that included a batting average of .571 in four games and a career-high four hits in the second game at WKU.

Baylor has rattled off a 21-3 record since dropping the two games to North Texas, including a nine-game winning streak immediately after the second loss to the Mean Green. The Lady Bears opened Big 12 play this past weekend, sweeping both games against Texas.

“Playing a Big 12 team midweek is good for us,” Kee said. “It allows us to see quality programs with very good pitching, which is something that we can’t simulate in practice. Hopefully, it will give us a good challenge going into this weekend against FIU.”
