DENTON, Texas (3/25/11) - The North Texas softball team returns home for five games, beginning with a three-game conference series against FIU this weekend. The Mean Green hosts a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

The Golden Panthers (15-14, 3-0) opened their conference play with a three-game sweep against Middle Tennessee. The Mean Green has picked up one conference win against Louisiana-Lafayette and was swept by Middle Tennessee. North Texas trails the series against FIU, 19-7, but has won three of the last four.

Mariza Martinez, Lisa Johnson and Renae Bromley all homered for the Mean Green in NT’s 9-5 loss to No. 18 Oklahoma State. Bromley’s three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning gave North Texas a 5-4 lead. The Cowgirls responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead and sealed the win with three runs in the sixth. North Texas is 2-8 this season against ranked opponents.

After just one home run in five games last week, North Texas hit three homers in a single game against No. 18 Oklahoma State on Wednesday. Mariza Martinez hit her second home run to lead off the second inning, Lisa Johnson hit her fourth homer of the season in the fourth and Renae Bromley hit her second of the season in the fifth. Caitlin Grimes and Mallory Cantler lead the team with five each. So far this season, North Texas has recorded 22 home runs.
