North Texas Set To Open C-USA Slate On Saturday
Mean Green Hosts UTEP For Three-Game Series
DENTON - The North Texas softball team returns home to play its Conference USA opener, hosting the UTEP Miners for a three-game set beginning on Saturday at noon at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green (11-9) enter conference looking to build on a 4-2 showing last week, which included two victories over Wichita State (RV) and one over Texas Tech. North Texas has had three-straight winning weeks.
Senior Stacey Underwood garnered her first C-USA Pitcher of the Week honor of the season after going 2-0 with two complete-game victories last week. Additionally, North Texas did not lose a game in which she appeared in.
Senior Jessica Elder also had one of her best outings of the season, tossing five innings of relief against Texas Tech, earning the win in North Texas' 12-11 comeback victory on Sunday. In the outing, she allowed three runs, two earned, with a career-best eight strikeouts opposed to one walk.
The Player of the Week Award stayed in Denton as well, as freshman Lindsay Gregory was named C-USA Co-Player of the Week after a 12-for-22 showing last week, including four multi-hit games. She hit her first two home runs of the season against Texas Tech last Sunday.
As a team, the Mean Green set 13 single-game highs last week, including at-bats (38), runs (14), hits (17), RBI (11), doubles (four) and home runs (three).
Individually, 11 single-game highs were set including runs scored (three, Camille Grahmann and Harley Perella), RBI (four, Lacy Gregory), home runs (two, Lindsay Gregory) and batters struck out (eight, Elder).
North Texas has several players scattered throughout the NCAA Division I leaders. Perella is tied for 10th in the nation with eight doubles, and senior Kelli Schkade is tied for 23rd in the country with 28 hits.
As for the Miners, they check in with a 5-15 mark after splitting a doubleheader with the New Mexico Lobos on Wednesday.
UTEP is hitting .285 as a team, just a tick above North Texas' .277 mark. Four Miners check in with an average north of .300, highlighted by Kiki Pepi's .357 clip.
Five different Miners have made at least two starts in the circle. Devyn Cretz leads the team with four wins and a 3.67 earned-run average.
Last season, UTEP swept the series at Helen of Troy Field in El Paso, but North Texas owns an 8-4 edge in the overall series.
