Mean Green Softball Opens Conference Play
DENTON, Texas (3/9/12) - The Mean Green softball team faces its fifth nationally-ranked opponent this season when it opens conference play on the road against No. 11 Louisiana-Lafayette.
DENTON, Texas (3/9/12) - The Mean Green softball team faces its fifth nationally-ranked opponent this season when it opens conference play on the road against No. 11 Louisiana-Lafayette. North Texas opens with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cajun Field and then rounds out play with a 12 p.m. single game on Sunday.
North Texas (8-10) is 2-28 in the series against the Ragin' Cajuns. The Mean Green went 1-2 last year in the season series against ULL, defeating the Ragin' Cajuns, 8-5, in the third game. North Texas has lost to No. 11 Oklahoma State, No. 20 Houston and No. 9 Baylor (twice) in 2012.
The North Texas softball team had one of its biggest offensive outputs of the season in a 13-2 run-rule victory against Austin Peay. The 13 runs scored was a season high and tied for the third most in school history. The 12 RBI was also a season high and tied for the second most in school history. The Mean Green tied a school record with 10 walks in the game and tied for the second-most home runs with four.
Grimes was named Sun Belt Co-Player of the Week after leading the Mean Green in the tournament with a .571 batting average on eight hits and eight RBI. She hit four home runs, including two against Loyola Chicago, one versus Austin Peay and scored the only run against Tulsa in the championship game. She is now tied for the team lead in home runs after not hitting a long ball since the Feb. 11 game against Sam Houston.
Lisa Johnson hit her second career grand slam in the 13-2 win against Austin Peay. She also posted a memorable grand slam in the 2009 win against Baylor. She is only the second North Texas player to hit two grand slams in her career. Rebecca Waters leads the way with three. Johnson went 1-for-1 with three runs scored and three walks in the game. It is the second time in her career that she has drawn three walks in a single game. Johnson also knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Austin Peay.
