Softball Hosts Play For Kay

DENTON, Texas (3/9/11) - The North Texas softball team hosts Missouri State today in its Play For Kay Charity Game at 2 p.m. All proceeds raised from t-shirt sales and cash donations will benefit DFW's Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of the Mean Green's most loyal supporter and long-time friend and co-worker, Kay Johnson. 

The Mean Green (11-6) has won nine out of its last 10 games and captured the Courtyard Classic title last weekend. Missouri State is 3-6 this season and leads the series against the Mean Green, 2-1.

Behind a 5-0 record, the North Texas softball team won the 2011 Courtyard Classic. The Mean Green posted shutout victories against UTEP and Wichita State and came back to defeat Louisiana Tech and Ole Miss. Ashley Kirk was named tournament MVP, while Mallory Cantler, Monica Hirsch and Mariza Martinez were all named to the all-tournament team.

Freshman Brooke Foster posted her third triple of the season against UTEP. She knocked in three runs with her bases-clearing hit. With her three triples, she is already tied for second for most triples in a single season. Susan Waters holds the record with four.Mariza Martinez is tied with Foster with recording three triples at Lovelace Stadium.

Admission is free in lieu of a cash donation at the gate. Fans can also make on-line donations.
