Terry And Kirk Receive SBC Weekly Honors

DENTON, Texas (3/4/13)  -- North Texas sophomore third baseman Jordan Terry and junior right-handed pitcher Ashley Kirk were both honored by the Sun Belt Conference this week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.

After leading North Texas with a 4-1 record this past weekend at the CenturyLink Classic, Terry was named SBC Player of the Week and Kirk received SBC Pitcher of the Week honors. The recognition is the second for Terry this season and the first for Kirk in 2013. Kirk has received this honor three times in her career. This is the first time that North Texas softball has received both conference player and pitcher recognition in the same week.

Terry posted two multi-hit games and knocked in eight runs for a .438 batting average in the five games this past weekend. She hit two home runs, a double and struck out only once in 16 at bats. She helped give North Texas a 3-1 lead against Texas A&M Corpus Christi with a two-RBI single in the third and gave the Mean Green a 2-0 lead against Texas State with a two-run home run in the first inning. She posted a team-leading fourth home run in the 9-1 win against the Islanders. Terry is leading the team overall with a .340 hitting percentage and 18 RBI.

Kirk picked up two of NT's four wins at the CenturyLink Classic. She posted an ERA of 0.64 in 11 innings of work. In the 7-3 win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, she tied her own school record with 14 strikeouts. She has accomplished that feat three times in her career.  In the 9-3 win against Texas State, Kirk picked up the win in relief. She pitched four hitless innings and struck out seven batters. She struck out 21 batters in 11 innings of work.

North Texas (11-10) opens conference play this weekend when it faces FIU at home. The Mean Green plays a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
