Softball Heads East For UNC-Wilmington Tournament
North Texas Enters 4-5
Wilmington, North Carolina – After securing its first winning-weekend of the young season, the North Texas softball team heads east for a three-day tournament hosted by UNC-Wilmington at Boseman Field beginning on Friday.
The Mean Green (4-5) are slated to play UNC-Wilmington, Maryland-Baltimore County and Appalachian State over the course of the tournament.
North Texas is coming off a 3-2 showing at the Getterman Classic in Waco, where they knocked off No. 23 Baylor 3-2 in extra innings. It was the fourth win over the Lady Bears under head coach Tracey Kee.
Offensively, North Texas is paced by Lacy Gregory (.481) and Kelli Schkade (.387). After a 1-for-12 showing on opening weekend, Schkade broke out of her slump, going 11-for-19 in Waco, earning a spot on the all-tournament team. Gregory went 8-for-16, also earning a spot on the all-tournament team.
Stacey Underwood has been the anchor of the rotation thus far, carrying a 3-2 record into Wilmington, and leads the team in innings pitched (27), strikeouts (15) wins (three) and appearances (six).
Lauren Craine has been a bright spot in the rotation, owning a 1-0 record and is coming off her best start of the season in which she tossed six innings of one-run softball against Lamar on Feb. 18.
The Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington own a 3-1 record after the Charleston Southern Tournament. Rachel Willis, who is hitting .417, paces the offensive attack for the Seahawks. In the circle, Peyton Jordan (1-1) has thrown the bulk of the innings so far. As a staff, they are limiting opposing hitters to a .182 batting average.
Maryland-Baltimore County (3-6) heads to Wilmington after a 2-3 showing at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational. Morgan Peyou leads the Retrievers with 13 hits, and senior left-handed pitcher Nicole Casagrand is a perfect 2-0 in the circle.
App. State completes the field of competition, and is riding a three-game winning streak after a 3-2 extra-inning victory against North Carolina A&T on Wednesday. Three members of the squad enter with an average north of .300.
North Texas will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. against UNCW followed by a 4:30 p.m. start against Appalachian State. The Mean Green will have the same game schedule on Saturday, but will play UMBC first and App. State to finish the day. Sunday’s game times are to be determined based on seeding after the first two days of action.
