USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll (Week 2)
DENTON -- In year three, head coach Tracey Kee has put North Texas softball on the map. After a 6-4 start that included a pair of wins over nationally-ranked Baylor and a tournament title at the Getterman Classic, the North Texas softball team is receiving votes in one of the national polls for the first time in school history.
North Texas received two votes in the USA Today/NFCA Division I softball coaches poll that was released Tuesday morning. If teams receiving votes counted in the rankings, the Mean Green would be ranked No. 33 in the nation.
"I am very proud of this team and their ability to compete until the last out," head coach Tracey Kee said. "They are gritty, hardworking and understand the need to compete in games as well as practices in order to move our program forward.
"My staff and student-athletes take great pride in representing the University of North Texas and the Mean Green athletic department. We want to take our program to new heights. We are Team 13, but we know and respect those who have helped lay the foundation for us the 12 years prior."
The Mean Green won the 2016 Getterman Classic this past weekend, posting a 4-1 record with a pair of wins over No. 21 Baylor during the three-day tournament in Waco. They won three of their four games in the final at-bat, including walk-off wins in both of their bracket play games against Liberty and No. 21 Baylor.
With the weekend sweep of No. 21 Baylor, North Texas picked up its 10th and 11th wins over nationally-ranked teams in school history, and the Mean Green has now also defeated multiple ranked teams in the same season for the third time in school history and the first time since 2011, when the Mean Green defeated a trio of ranked teams.
Dominant pitching and timely hitting propelled North Texas to a 4-1 record and the Getterman Classic tournament title. As a pitching staff, the Mean Green posted a 2.03 ERA, giving up just 17 runs -- 11 earned -- on 30 hits with five walks and 14 strikeouts in 38.0 innings over five games.
In their two games against No. 21 Baylor, North Texas scored 10 of their combined 14 runs with two outs, including the game-tying runs and what proved to be the game-winning runs in the first game, as well as the game-tying runs and the game-winning run in the Getterman Classic championship game.
Coming off the Getterman Classic tournament title in Waco, North Texas returns home for a 10-game home stand that includes the North Texas Invitational and the Mean Green Spring Fling over the next two weekends. The Mean Green begin play in the North Texas Invitational on Saturday with a doubleheader against Sam Houston State (1 p.m.) and Creighton (3 p.m.).
