DENTON – After a seven inning, 106-pitch gutsy performance that led North Texas to an upset of No. 7 Baylor in Waco Friday night, senior Madison Thompson was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for week three. The 1-0 victory marked just the third complete game and first shutout of the pitcher’s career.
"We are so happy for Madison and what she accomplished against a very tough Baylor team, head coach Tracey Kee said. “Obviously her teammates played a huge part in this victory, but to see a pitcher step up like she did was just the thing this team needed."
North Texas’ pitching staff has struggled out of the gates in the 2015 campaign, but judging by Thompson’s performance in the circle against the highly ranked Bears, you wouldn’t know it. The senior shut down the elite Baylor lineup that had posted a .322 batting average and took No. 2 Oregon down to the wire. The Friday night dominance in the circle could be attributed to extra one-on-one time with Kee in the bullpen the week prior.
“Madison is one of the hardest workers on our pitching staff and has made huge strides physically and mentally,” Kee explained. “She understands the game within the game, displaying that Friday night by controlling her emotions and making quality pitch after pitch. She trusted her movement, and just attacked the Baylor hitters and strike zone."
A Mean Green offense that has been consistent so far this year failed to provide run support for Thompson, but one run was all she needed. The senior would work out of jam after jam, bending but not breaking, to only allow seven hits but no runs. Thompson retired 20 of the 30 batters she faced, striking out three and walking three along the way.
“Madison is an unbelievable competitor,” Kee concluded. “Putting the programs best ever win in the win column will indeed help this team understand their potential."
In the first three weeks of the season, Kee’s program direction change is already visible as North Texas has already netted two Conference USA superlatives, knocking off the highest ranked opponent in program history in the process. This is the first C-USA weekly accolade in Thompson’s career, but look for more to come from her and this Mean Green squad as it begins to build momentum.
