Softball Competes In Texas Shootout

DENTON, Texas (2/23/12) - The North Texas softball team returns to tournament action this weekend when it competes in the Texas Shootout in Waco, Texas. The Mean Green (4-3) faces Texas State and Texas Tech on Friday, Feb. 24.

Hosted by Baylor, the Texas Shootout will feature some of the top teams in Texas, including Texas State, Texas Tech, Stephen F. Austin, UTEP and No. 9 Baylor. North Texas will face Texas State, Texas Tech, Stephen F. Austin and Baylor with a bracket game on Sunday. The Mean Green is 5-3 in the series against Texas State and 3-2 against the Red Raiders. North Texas has won the last three meetings against Tech but has not played them since 2009. Against Baylor, North Texas has won four out of the last six but trails the overall series, 7-4. 

Caitlin Grimes has been the catalyst this season for waking up the Mean Green bats. In two of the three games this past weekend, Grimes knocked in runs in her first two at-bats. She leads the Mean Green with nine hits and eight RBI.

Maddelyn Fraley hit her third home run in the win against Missouri State. It was her team-leading third home run of the season. She has hit three home runs in 17 at-bats this season. The senior hit three home runs last year in 82 at-bats. Fraley also leads the team with seven walks, which ties her total from last season. She has started all seven games this season at designated player and is second on the team with a .353 batting average.

Megan Rupp is 8-for-17 in her last five games and has hit safely in all five. The senior has rebounded after starting the season 0-for-6. She was named to the Fairfield Inn and Suites Classic all-tournament team after hitting .500 in the three games. She is fourth on the team with a .348 batting average.

In the eight-run fifth inning against Wichita State, sophomore Jackie Miller posted a key hit for the Mean Green. With the bases loaded, Miller hit a pinch-hit RBI single. The hit kept the ball moving for the Mean Green.  NT scored five more runs in the inning to seal the win.

Lisa Johnson posted three hits in the three games over the weekend. All were for extra bases. She posted two doubles and recorded her second career triple. Four of her six hits this season have been for extra bases. 

Brittany Simmons picked up her third win of the season in the victory against Wichita State. She relieved starter Lauren Poole and pitched 1.2 innings to get the win. The junior is now 3-0 in four appearances and two starts this season. She is the first pitcher in school history to start a season 3-0.
