Mean Green Softball Hosts Sleep Inn Classic

DENTON, Texas (2/17/11) - North Texas returns home to host the Sleep Inn Classic on Feb. 18-20. The Mean Green will host Nebraska for the first time in school history in its home opener on Friday, Feb. 18 at 3 pm.
North Texas will also host Tennessee Tech, Northwestern State and Centenary in the five-team tournament. The Mean Green is a combined 6-3 all-time against its four opponents. North Texas is 4-3 in home openers. The Mean Green will play four games in the three-day tournament. All of the Mean Green games are available on live stats. The Friday game against Nebraska and two games on Sunday will be broadcast on KNTU.
North Texas Goes 2-4 At Kajikawa Classic
The Mean Green won its opening two games at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. this past weekend. North Texas needed 11 innings to defeat Cal State Bakersfield and then shut out Appalachian State, 6-0. NT held leads against Oregon State and No. 14 Oregon but could not hold off the two Pac-10 teams. North Texas also fell to No. 18 Stanford and Northwestern.
For only the third time in school history, North Texas played a game lasting more than 10 innings. The Mean Green needed 11 innings to defeat Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday, Feb. 10. The 11-inning game ties for the second-longest game in school history. North Texas played 11 and 13 inning games against Troy. Brittany Simmons pitched all 11 innings, a career high and a school record. Only Kristina Fowler has pitched more innings than Simmons (11.2).
Career Day For Simmons
Brittany Simmons had a career day against Cal State Bakersfield. She picked up the team's first win of season and also picked up some personal bests. She pitched a career-high 11 innings, which ties for the second-most innings pitched by an individual at North Texas. She also struck out a career-high six batters. She threw 135 pitches against Cal State Bakersfield and 96 of them were strikes. Simmons went 1-3 in four starts this past weekend.
Johnson Starts Off Where She Left Off
Lisa Johnson started off the 2011 season where she left off in 2010; getting on base. In her first at-bat of the 2011 season, she knocked in a run with a double. It was the Mean Green's first hit of the 2011 season. Johnson tied for the team lead with six hits in the tournament and led the team with three walks. She also hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot against Oregon.
At The Lead-Off Spot
Megan Rupp started all six games at left field and batted at the lead-off position this past weekend. She went 2-for-5 in the opening win with three RBI and two runs scored. She tied the game in the fourth with an RBI double and contributed two more RBI in the four-run 11th. She is third on the team with five hits.
Grimes Getting It Done
Caitlin Grimes had a big weekend; she posted four hits and all were for extra bases. She recorded two doubles, two home runs and knocked in five RBI. She led the Mean Green in home runs, RBI and total bases with 12. She hit the Mean Green's first home run of the season against Appalachian State; a three-run shot that sealed the 6-0 win. She went 2-for-4 against Northwestern, including a double and a solo home run.
