DENTON – Last season, the Mean Green started 2-3 before heading to Waco for the Getterman Classic. The team went 4-1 at the tournament, sparking an 11-3 stretch before opening Conference USA play.

At 1-3, the 2017 squad looks to right the ship in Waco as well.

North Texas went 4-1 at the 2016 Getterman Classic, including two extra-inning victories over No. 21 Baylor, and wins over Liberty and Northwestern State.

Overall, the Mean Green are 6-4 in Waco under head coach Tracey Kee.

North Texas looks to improve on its .216 average with runners in scoring position from opening weekend, as it stranded 21 runners in its first four games.

Good news is North Texas has found ways to manufacture runs at the Getterman Classic, including in its two come-from-behind victories over Baylor.

Freshman Lacy Gregory shined on offense for North Texas, leading the team with a slash line of .455/.500/.818. She tallied five hits and collected five RBI, both tops on the team.

Senior Stacey Underwood dominated in the circle on Sunday, tossing a one-hit shutout against UMass Lowell to secure North Texas’ first victory of the season.

Grand Canyon (6-0) and Lamar (2-3) will round out the field along with host Baylor.

The ‘Lopes of GCU, who transitioned from Division II to Div. I in 2013, swept their own tournament on opening weekend, defeating Northern Colorado and Bradley three times a piece. Laynee Gomez paces the ‘Lopes offense after one week of play, entering with a .526 average (10-for-19). Taylor Nowlin owns a perfect 5-0 record in the circle for GCU.

Lamar dropped two closely-contested games to No. 19 Texas A&M (2-1, 3-2) and one to Ohio State (4-3), but picked up two wins over Central Michigan. Four Cardinals enter with an average north of .300, led by Elizabeth Castillo’s .400 average.

The Lady Bears, ranked No. 23 in the nation, started the season at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Arizona, and left The Grand Canyon State with three wins opposed to two losses.

BU has three players hitting .400 or better and one at the .500 mark. Gia Rodoni leads the staff with a 2-0 record and a 1.20 earned run average.

North Texas begins play at the Getterman Classic with a doubleheader on Friday, facing Lamar at 10 a.m. and GCU at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the squad will once again square off against Lamar and GCU with game times slated for 3 and 5:30 p.m. The Mean Green and Baylor will play on Sunday at 11 a.m.
