Schkade Named Conference USA Co-Player Of The Week
Junior Hits .529 With Three Home Runs In Opening Weekend Of 2016
IRVING, Texas — After a weekend that saw her hit .529 with three doubles, three home runs, six runs scored and seven RBI at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Arizona, junior shortstop Kelli Schkade was recognized by the league office as the Conference USA Co-Player of the Week. It's the first Conference USA weekly honor for the Mean Green this season and the first of her career.
As part of her 9-for-17 weekend, Schkade led off the 2016 season with a solo blast against No. 13 Arizona, becoming the first player in school history to hit a home run in the team’s first at-bat of the season, and it was only the beginning of a stellar weekend for the Albany, Texas, native.
On Friday, against No. 13 Arizona and Nebraska-Omaha, Schkade went 4-for-7 with a double, three home runs, three runs scored and five RBI. Her two home runs against Nebraska-Omaha also tied the school record. On Saturday, in the 6-5 come-from-behind win over Southern Utah, Schkade delivered with a two-RBI double as part of a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.
For the weekend, she tallied a base hit in each of the five games at the Hillenbrand Invitational, including four multi-hit games, and her three home runs have already matched her home run total from 2015.
Schkade and the Mean Green travel to Waco this weekend to compete in the Getterman Classic, hosted by No. 16 Baylor. North Texas will play Northwestern State and Liberty on Friday and No. 16 Baylor on Saturday.
