DENTON – After Friday’s game against UMass Lowell was cancelled due to inclement weather disrupting travel in the Northeast, the Mean Green softball team’s season opener will come Saturday with a doubleheader against UML and Arkansas on day one of the North Texas Invitational.

The six-game tournament runs through Sunday, with each team playing three games.

North Texas seeks to build on its 22-33 mark from a year ago. The team returns three of its top four hitters from 2016, and gets its pitching staff back. Kelli Schkade will be the driving force of the offense, while Jessica Elder and Stacey Underwood bring leadership to a staff looking to rebound after a rocky season in the circle.

Arkansas and UML are in a similar situation as the Mean Green. The Razorbacks (10-31) and River Hawks (11-39) are both looking to rebound after sub-.500 seasons from a year ago.

The Razorbacks and River Hawks are unfamiliar opponents for North Texas. The Mean Green has played Arkansas twice (1-1), and this marks the first career meeting with the River Hawks.
