Lawson Strikes Out Nine In Mean Green Victory Against No. 4 FAU

Mobile, Ala. (5/14/10) - Kayla Lawson tied a career high with nine strikeouts to lead the North Texas softball team to a 5-1 victory against No. 4 FAU in day three action at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

The Mean Green improves to 29-19 overall and will play No. 6 Troy at 5:30 p.m. today. FAU falls to 29-26 and is eliminated from the tournament with a 1-2 record.

 Lawson picks up her first win of the tournament and improves to 8-3. She pitched a complete game and allowed one run off three hits. Lawson held the Owls to just one hit through five innings work. Jessica Myers hit a two-out solo home run in the sixth to break up Lawson's shutout.

North Texas jumped on the scoreboard first in the second inning with three runs. Lesley Hirsch knocked home her sister, Monica, from third with a single down the left field line with two outs. Renae Bromley brought Lesley home with her sixth home run of the season. Caitlin Grimes started the scoring by reaching base on an FAU error and was subbed for by Monica Hirsch.

Lisa Johnson added to the score in the third inning with a two-run homer. Mallory Cantler started the inning with a double. It was Johnson's team-leading 11th home run of the season. She is now tied for third on the Mean Green's single-season record list for home runs in a season. Only Mariza Martinez and Susan Waters have hit more home runs in a single season.

With Cantler's two RBI this game, she moves into sixth place on NT's single-season record list for RBI. The Mean Green increased its home run total this season to 52. Rebecca Waters helped set the record with the team's 50th home run against FIU.
