North Texas Drop Regular Season Finale To UAB
Mean Green Grab Seven Seed In Conference Tournament
DENTON - The North Texas softball team concluded its regular season with a 6-0 loss to UAB on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green enter this week's Conference USA tournament as the seven seed and will play Middle Tennessee in the first game at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
"We started the season wanting to make the conference tournament and we accomplished that," North Texas head coach Tracey Kee said. "Now it's a matter of reassessing ourselves and what positives and negatives we bring. We have to attack Wednesday like it's a completely new season. Everybody is 0-0."
Emily Kachel (13-13) earned the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief for starting pitcher Claire Blount. Hope Trautwein (15-11) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in three innings of work.
"They made adjustments faster and their pitchers threw well," Kee said. "We just didn't play with a lot of fight and fire."
For the second game in a row, UAB (24-30-1, 15-8-1) scored first after back-to-back two-out doubles from Analyse Petree and Rachel Rogers. The Blazers tacked on three more in the third, including a two-run home run by Blount, just the 10th allowed by Trautwein all season.
"When we got two outs and then saw them put that first run up, you could almost see our kids get deflated," Kee said. "That's something that I haven't seen all year. Typically one run won't hold these kids down."
After Hanna Rebar took over on the mound for Trautwein to begin the fourth, Rebar surrendered a leadoff home run to Ashton Clem to extend the deficit to five. Five batters later, Rogers singled in Natalie Erwin for the fourth two-out RBI of the game for UAB.
"It was almost like both teams only played a three-inning game with the energy and vibes coming off the field," Kee said.
North Texas (25-26, 11-12 C-USA) threatened in the fifth, loading the bases on a base hit, walk and hit-by-pitch for Hanna Rebar, whose potential grand slam fell just feet short and into the glove of Sarah Crawford at the track.
Ally Lindsey and Maria Priest pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, keeping UAB off the board and allowing just one hit. Priest struck out two Blazers to close out the sixth and seventh innings.
Seventh-seeded North Texas will face Middle Tennessee in game two of the Conference USA Tournament at 2:30 p.m. CT Wednesday in Charlotte.
With three strikeouts, Hope Trautwein set the program record for strikeouts by a freshman (160).
Lacy Gregory extended her hit streak in C-USA games to 11 games.
The Mean Green are 8-19 when allowing opponents to score first.
