Softball Sets School Record In Win

DENTON, Texas (5/5/12) - The North Texas softball team scored a school record 17 runs in a doubleheader sweep against Northwestern State on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green won by scores of 17-8 and 5-1.

The Mean Green finishes the regular season with a 26-24-1 record and enters the conference tournament next week as the No. 4 seed. Northwestern State falls to 19-31 overall. The 26 wins ties for the third-most wins in a single season and the 13 conference wins sets a school record.

North Texas came back from an 8-0 deficit in the first game by scoring eight runs in the second inning and nine runs in the fourth, ending the game on a run-rule in the fifth inning. The 17 runs scored sets a school record and the 14 runs batted in ties a school record.

Brittany Simmons won her 11th game of the season in the opening game. She struggled early, giving up seven earned runs in the first two innings but shut down the Lady Demons the final three innings. The 11 wins are a personal best and ties for the fourth-most wins in a single season at North Texas.

Megan Rupp knocked in three runs, and Lauren Poole picked up her fourth win of the season in the 5-1 victory. Poole's only mistake was a solo home run in the seventh inning. She gave up one run off three hits.

Down 8-0 in the bottom of the second inning, North Texas responded with eight runs to tie the game. Lesley Hirsch knocked in the first run with an RBI single, Brooke Foster and Caitlin Grimes both posted two-RBI doubles and Maddelyn Fraley hit a two-run homer.

Fraley recorded her team-leading 12th home run of the season. The home run moved her into sole possession of third place on NT's single-single record list. Only Susan Waters has hit more home runs in a single season. She also knocked in her 43rd RBI of the season, moving her into third place at North Texas.

Jessica Shields knocked in the first run of the fourth inning to give North Texas a 9-8 lead. The senior drove in the first run and the ninth run of the inning with RBI singles. She posted four hits and four RBI in the two games. Jordan Terry recorded a three-run homer in the inning. She and Grimes posted three hits in the win.

Rupp posted an RBI single in the second inning of the second game to give North Texas an early lead. She posted a two-run homer, her first of the season, in the fifth inning to seal the win.

North Texas honored its five seniors at the Mean Green's final home game of the season. The five seniors contributed 15 hits and 13 RBI in the doubleheader.

The Mean Green will open play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 9 in Boca Raton, Fla.
