DENTON, Texas (4/28/13) - Ashley Kirk pitched her second no-hitter of the weekend, and the North Texas softball team completed its conference series sweep against ULM with an 8-0 run-rule victory on Sunday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green improves to 25-22 overall and 12-9 in the Sun Belt Conference, while the Warhawks fall to 19-30 and 3-17. The three conference wins moves the Mean Green into fourth place in the conference standings.
North Texas capped its conference schedule with two conference series sweeps. The 12 conference wins ties for the second most in school history and the 12-9 record ties for the top winning percentage.
Ashley Kirk (13-8) won all three games against ULM this weekend. She also pitched her second no-hitter of the weekend. She pitched five innings and struck out eight batters. She walked one and hit a batter.
In the three games this weekend, the junior pitched 11.1 innings of no-hit ball. She struck out 16 batters, walked three and had only one wild pitch. Kirk has now struck out 152 batters this season, placing her third on NT's single-season list. She already holds the top two spots. She needs 12 more strikeouts to break her own single-season record. The right-hander set the career strikeout record at North Texas last weekend.
Karly Williams knocked in the first run of the day in the second inning with a sacrifice fly. Dani Hoff scored the run after leading off the inning with a single. After Hoff flied out to lead off the fourth, Taylor Schoblocher hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season to deep center field. Lesley Hirsch capped the scoring in the inning with a bases-clearing double. She was tagged out at third trying to stretch the double into a triple.
Hoff ended the game on a run-rule in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer to right field. It was her first home run of the season. The sophomore led the Mean Green this weekend with six hits and five RBI.
North Texas completes its regular season with a Tuesday home game against UTA at 4 p.m. and then a road game on Wednesday against Stephen F. Austin.
