North Texas Falls At Texas, 6-0
Loss Drops Mean Green To .500
AUSTIN – The Texas Longhorns received a dominant performance in the circle from Erica Wright en route to a 6-0 victory over the North Texas softball team on Wednesday evening at Red and Charline McCombs Field.
Wright tossed six innings, allowing four hits with six strikeouts opposed to three walks while stranding seven North Texas runners on base.
“I know in five of the seven innings we had a runner on second with less than one out and didn't drive them home,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “Our hitters had some very undisciplined at-bats throughout the lineup. Eight of our hitters didn’t have a good approach and that’s not something that has happened this season, so we need to get that fixed.”
Senior Kelli Schkade was the lone North Texas hitter to record two hits in the contest.
Senior Stacey Underwood (12-11) took the loss in 3.2 innings of work, walking three to go with four hits. Senior Jessica Elder and sophomore Lauren Craine combined for 2.1 innings of relief.
“Stacey made better pitches tonight than she has in her last four outings and she did a good job of keeping the ball in zones off the plate,” Kee added. “Credit to Texas for being disciplined hitters, but for us it was getting her back in the strike zone and she did that tonight.”
After two scoreless innings, UT’s Celina Felix put the Longhorns on the board with a two-out, two-run triple in the gap in right center, plating Stephanie Wong and Kaitlyn Washington.
The Mean Green (24-24) had a chance to cut into UT’s lead in the fourth, but Wright worked out of a one-out jam to keep her squad up by two. In the bottom of the stanza, UT (26-20) loaded the bases but was unable to stretch its advantage as Elder, who inherited the bases loaded jam after relieving Underwood, got Devon Tunning to fly out to center.
UT distanced itself from the Mean Green in the bottom of the fifth, plating four runs on two hits while capitalizing on a throwing error by North Texas. Bekah Alcozer did the bulk of the damage with a two-run home run to left field.
In the sixth, Lacy Gregory singled and eventually advanced to third on freshman Camille Grahmann's base hit up middle, but was stranded there as Wright got pinch hitter Grace Blagg to ground out to short, ending the threat.
- Hannah Gerecke reached base for the sixth-straight game after a walk in the second, matching her season high of consecutive games reached base.
- Kelli Schkade collected the 49th multi-hit game of her career with a two-hit performance.
- Camille Grahmann went 1-for-1 off the bench for the Mean Green.
- The Mean Green finish the season 12-3 against in-state foes.
- North Texas falls to 2-5 against Big 12 Conference teams.
