(4/22/11) - Mallory Cantler hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to give North Texas a 5-3 come-from-behind victory in the first game of a doubleheader against South Alabama on Friday afternoon at Jaguar Field. Despite a Mean Green rally in the seventh inning, the Jaguars held onto a 4-2 victory in the second game of the day.
The Jaguars (32-13, 11-8) took the conference series, winning two of the three games. North Texas falls to 20-28 and 6-15 in the Sun Belt.
Ashley Kirk won her ninth game of the season with a complete game performance. She gave up three runs off four hits and did not allow a hit the last three innings. She struck out six batters, increasing her season strikeout total to 143. The redshirt freshman is three strikeouts away from setting the single-season record.
Mariza Martinez scored two runs in the doubleheader, setting the career school record for runs scored at North Texas with 123. The senior tied the record in the first game with a solo home run and then set the record in the second game. She drew a walk and then scored her 123rd career run with Lisa Johnson's home run.
Hannah Campbell picked up her second straight win against the Mean Green in the 4-2 win. She allowed just two runs off five Mean Green hits in the game. She held a shutout through six innings until Johnson hit a two-run homer in the seventh. Martinez led off the inning with a walk and Johnson brought her home with her sixth homer of the season.
Brittany Simmons took the loss in the second game, falling to 10-13. She held the Jaguars to just one hit through five innings but gave up the four runs off four hits in the sixth.
In the opening game, Cantler gave North Texas a 5-3 lead with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning. The Mean Green was down, 3-2, heading into the seventh. Renae Bromley led off the inning with a single and was advanced to second by a sacrifice bunt.
With two outs, Courtney Bradshaw kept the game alive by reaching base on an error. Bromley scored on the play to tie the game, 3-3. Cantler hit her eighth home run of the season to give the Mean Green its first lead of the game. Cantler and Grimes are tied for team lead in home runs.
The Jaguars took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off an RBI double and added to the lead in the fourth inning. Haley Hopkins led off the fourth with a solo home run. Crocker followed with a single, stole a base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Katy Neal knocked her home with an RBI single to give USA a 3-0 lead.
North Texas scored its first run of the series in the fifth inning. Bromley led off with a double to the outfield wall. Megan Rupp brought her home with a single to right center field. Bromley and Rupp both posted two hits in the game.
Mariza Martinez made the deficit one run, 3-2, with a solo home run in the sixth inning that hit off the scoreboard in left center field. It was her seventh home run of the season. The outfielder went 2-for-4 in the game with a double to go along with the home run. She is tied for the team lead with seven doubles.
North Texas returns to action when it faces Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday, April 27 at 4 p.m. at Lovelace Stadium.
