South Alabama Defeats Mean Green

Mobile, Ala. (4/21/11) - Hannah Campbell pitched a complete game shutout to lead the South Alabama softball team to a 5-0 win against North Texas on Thursday night at Jaguar Field.

The Mean Green falls to 19-27 and 5-14 in the conference, while South Alabama improves to 31-12 and 10-7 in the Sun Belt.

South Alabama erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. A hit batter, a base on balls and a single loaded the bases for Haley Hopkins, who brought everyone home with a triple to right center field. Christina Crocker hit a two-homer to left field to put USA ahead, 5-0.

The Mean Green left six runners stranded in the game and hit into two double plays. Off three singles, the Mean Green loaded the bases in the fourth inning. Campbell struck out Renae Bromley to end the North Texas threat.

Brittany Simmons (10-12) took the loss for the Mean Green. She pitched 4.1 innings and allowed five runs off five hits. She pitched four scoreless innings before getting into trouble in the fifth.

 Ashley Kirk pitched 1.2 innings of relief. She struck out two batters, increasing her strikeout total to 137. The two strikeouts moves her into second place on the single-season record list.

Lisa Johnson and Lesley Hirsch led the Mean Green with two hits each. Hopkins led the Jaguars with three hits. Each team posted five hits in the game.

North Texas returns to action on Friday, April 22 when it faces South Alabama in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
