DENTON, Texas (4/16/11) - Mariza Martinez knocked in four runs to lead the North Texas softball team to an 8-1 victory against ULM on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. ULM used five runs in the 10th inning to take a 7-2 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Mean Green improves to 18-25 and 4-13 in the Sun Belt, while ULM stands at 24-18 and 10-7 in the conference. NT leads the overall series, 14-6.
North Texas head coach T.J. Hubbard picked up his 100th career victory. He is the program's winningest coach.
North Texas jumped out early in the second game, 2-1, off RBI doubles by Lisa Johnson and Mallory Cantler and was able to tack on more runs in the later innings. The Mean Green held an early 2-0 lead in the opening loss but was unable to hold on as ULM scored two runs in the fifth and five in the 10th.
Ashley Kirk (8-13) picked up the win for the Mean Green. She pitched a complete game and allowed just one run off two hits. She struck out eight Warhawks.
Martinez went 2-for-4 in the nightcap with one run scored and four RBI. With the Mean Green ahead, 2-1, and runners on second and third, the senior plated two runs with a single to right center field in the fifth inning. Monica Hirsch followed with a single, and both runners came home off an ULM error to put North Texas ahead, 6-1.
Martinez came up again in the sixth with runners on second and third and knocked in two runs with a double to left field. North Texas posted four doubles in the game. Johnson leads the team with seven, and Martinez and Cantler follow with six each.
Brianna Love scored ULM's only run of the game with a solo home run.
North Texas took an early 2-0 in the opening game off a ULM error and an illegal pitch. The Warhawks responded with two runs in the fifth to tie the game. ULM was aided by a Mean Green miscue.
ULM was able to break through in the 10th with five runs off two hits and one Mean Green error. Both teams recorded seven hits in the game. North Texas left 11 runners stranded on base.
Brittany Simmons (9-11) picked up the loss for the Mean Green. She allowed two earned runs off seven hits in 9.1 innings of work.
North Texas and ULM will face-off in the third deciding game on Sunday, April 17 at 12 p.m.
