FIU Wins Conference Series

DENTON, Texas (3/27/11) - Behind eight runs, the FIU softball team won the conference series against the Mean Green with an 8-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.

The Panthers won two of the three conference games this weekend to take the season series. FIU improves to 17-15 and 5-1 in the Sun Belt, while North Texas falls to 14-17 and 2-7 in the conference.

North Texas scored an early run in the second inning off a Panthers error, but a two-run homer by Brie Rojas in the third gave FIU a 2-1 lead.

FIU added runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to secure the victory. North Texas left 10 runners stranded on base and was only able to add solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

Brittany Simmons took the loss for the Mean Green. She falls to 7-8 this season. The sophomore gave up six runs off seven hits in four innings of work.

FIU outhit the Mean Green, 9-4. The Panthers were hurt by four errors but the Mean Green was only able to capitalize with three runs.

North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 when it hosts nationally-ranked Missouri in a doubleheader at 4 p.m.
