Mean Green Softball Drops First Game To FAU

Boca Raton, Fla. (3/26/13) - The Florida Atlantic softball team scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 victory against North Texas on Tuesday night at the FAU Softball Stadium.

The Mean Green falls to 16-14 and 4-4 in the conference, while FAU improves to 24-18 and 7-3 in the Sun Belt. FAU takes the first game in the three-game conference series.

North Texas took two leads in the game but FAU came back twice to tie the score. In the bottom of the seventh, Shelby Knox drew a one-out walk. After a flyout for the second out, Knox stole second and ended up scoring on the play when the throw from the catcher went into the outfield and was misplayed by the centerfielder.

Ashley Kirk (7-5) took the loss. She pitched 6.2 innings and allowed three runs off three hits. She struck out six batters but was hurt by five walks. All three runs that scored reached base on walks.

Dani Hoff gave North Texas a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double. Jordan Terry scored from first on the hit to left center. It was Hoff's team-leading ninth double of the season.

FAU quickly tied up the game in the bottom of the first with a squeeze play that scored the runner from third.

Madison Tierney brought home NT's second run and gave NT is second lead with a single down the left-field line in the second inning. Karly Williams scored from second after reaching base with a walk.

FAU tied the game for the second time, 2-2, in the fourth inning with an RBI single to right field.

North Texas outhit the Owls, 4-3. Hoff posted two of the Mean Green's four hits.

The Mean Green returns to action on Wednesday, March 27 when it plays FAU in a doubleheader at 4 p.m.
