Softball Splits Doubleheader With FIU

DENTON, Texas (3/26/11) - The North Texas softball team split a doubleheader with FIU on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green won the first game, 3-2, but was run-ruled in the second game, 12-3.
The Mean Green extends its record to 14-16 overall and 2-6 in Sun Belt play, while FIU improves to 16-15 and 4-1 in Sun Belt play. North Texas has won four of the last six meetings with the Panthers.
Brittany Simmons picked up the win in the first game. She pitched a complete game, allowing two runs off six hits in seven innings of work. She improves her overall record in the circle to 7-7.
North Texas took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, 2-1, capitalizing on three errors by FIU. Renae Bromley knocked in a key run in the sixth inning with a single. She brought home Monica Hirsch, who reached base with her first triple of the season.
Despite a solo home run by FIU in the seventh, the Mean Green was able to hold onto a 3-2 win. The Panthers outhit the Mean Green, 6-4.
The Panthers used 10 hits, including a grand slam, to take a five-inning run-rule victory in the nightcap. FIU scored five runs in the third and fourth inning to jump ahead of the Mean Green.
Kayla Burri hit a grand slam in the third inning of the second game to put FIU ahead, 5-0. Burri had two home runs and seven RBI in the combined two games.
North Texas responded with three runs in the bottom of the third off RBI's by Mariza Martinez and Courtney Bradshaw. The Mean Green was also aided by two FIU errors.
FIU sealed the win with five more runs in the fourth inning. The Panthers connected on five singles to bring home the runs.
Ashley Kirk took the loss for the Mean Green. She gave up five runs off four hits in a combined four innings of work.
North Texas returns to action against FIU with a single game on Sunday, March 27 at 12 p.m.
