Softball Splits Doubleheader With FIU

Miami, Fla. (3/24/12) - Maddelyn Fraley knocked in four runs to lead the North Texas softball team to a 9-4 win against FIU on Saturday afternoon at the FIU Softball Complex. The Mean Green lost the second game of the doubleheader, 5-1.

North Texas took an early lead in the first game, lost it and then regained the advantage with a seven-run sixth inning. FIU was hurt by five errors in the game.

Brittany Simmons (9-5) pitched a complete game in the win, allowing four runs off five hits. Mari Dawson (10-6) took the loss, allowing one earned run off eight hits.

The Panthers took a 4-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap, and Jen Gniadek held the Mean Green to five hits to take the win. Ashley Kirk (2-8) took the loss despite striking out 12 batters.

The Mean Green outhit the Panthers, 8-5, in the opening win. Fraley went 2-for-4 in the game with four RBI.

In the opening game, Fraley knocked in the first run with a single through the right side of the infield. Brooke Foster scored from second to give North Texas an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Darian Blake scored the Mean Green's second run off a FIU error. The sophomore posted a two-out single up the middle.

FIU scored four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead, 4-2. Kayla Burri drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run of the inning, and Ashley McClain cleared the bases with a double to left center.

Megan Rupp started a seven-run sixth inning with a single up the middle. Two walks loaded the bases for Lesley Hirsch who brought home a run after getting hit by a pitch. Foster tied the game with an RBI single, and Lisa Johnson gave North Texas the lead with a bases-loaded walk.

Fraley added insurance runs with a three-RBI double down the right-field line. FIU's second error of the inning gave North Texas its seventh run of the sixth. All seven runs were unearned.

FIU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the Mean Green loss off an RBI single by McClain and a two-run homer by Brie Rojas. Rojas added another run in the fifth inning with a sacrifice bunt that brought a runner home.

Grimes scored the Mean Green's only run of the second game with a solo home run in the sixth inning. It was her seventh of the season, tying her for the team lead.

With her two walks today, Johnson moved into second place on the single-season walks list with 24. The senior holds the record for most walks in a season with 29.

Kirk's 12 strikeouts are the third-most in a single game at North Texas.

North Texas returns to action on Sunday, March 25 when it rounds out play against FIU with a 12 p.m. game.
