Season Statistics

MIAMI - North Texas put the exclamation point on a pivotal sweep of Conference USA opponent FIU on the road Sunday afternoon, shutting out the Panthers 4-0 in dominating fashion. The victory marked the second consecutive weekend in which the Mean Green has pulled off a conference sweep, sending its record to 6-3 in C-USA play and moving North Texas into the No. 2 spot in the West Division standings.

Continuing a trend that was seen throughout the series, North Texas jumped on FIU early in the top half of the first to take a 2-0 lead. After Kat Strunk reached on a fielder's choice and Dani Hoff worked a full-count walk, Mallory Land's team-leading ninth double of the year cleared the bases to plate both runs with two outs.

The Mean Green added two more two-out runs in the top of the fifth, once again initiated by Land, who made it all the way to second while reaching base on an error by the FIU third baseman. In arguably her best at bat of the year, Bryana Wade worked a full count before driving the seventh offering deep over the left center wall for a two-run blast.

Wade's home run proved to be all the final run support needed for North Texas starting pitcher Monique Garcia, who picked up the second win in her career on Sunday. Although the freshman's no-hit bid was spoiled in the fourth inning on a play second baseman Karly Williams nearly robbed, Garcia would finish the outing with only one hit and three total baserunners allowed in 4.0 innings pitched.

Stacey Underwood showed her flexibility in the circle, entering the fifth inning as relief for Garcia. The sophomore continued right where she left off, tossing 3.0 innings of three hit, shutout ball en route to the first save of her career at North Texas.

Next Up:

After picking up an important Conference USA sweep of FIU, North Texas will now take a midweek break from conference play for a matchup with No. 16 Baylor in Denton. The Mean Green previously upset the then No. 7 Bears in Waco earlier this season. First pitch of the second meeting between the two is set for 6:00 p.m. CT on Wednesday at Lovelace Stadium.
