SAN ANTONIO – Snapping an 11-game road losing streak dating back to 2017, the North Texas softball team split a doubleheader with Conference USA West Division foe UT San Antonio on Saturday afternoon.

"We were just trying to get a win, whether it's on the road or at home," Mean Green head coach Tracey Kee said. "I thought our kids came out very focused and fired up."

Game One

A pair of solo home runs from Katie Clark was the difference-maker in North Texas’ 4-2 win over UTSA in the first game. Clark led off the first and seventh innings with shots to dead center for her third and fourth home runs of the season.

Hope Trautwein (5-5) tossed her fourth complete game of the year, striking out five and allowing just two runs on seven hits. Trautwein didn’t allow a walk in the win, marking the fourth time the Mean Green didn’t give up a free pass this season.

In the first at-bat of the game, Clark worked her way to a full count on eight pitches before sending the ninth pitch over the wall in dead center to give North Texas a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Mean Green reached base on three straight at-bats as Rhylie Makawe singled to right, Sam Rea reached on an error and Harley Perella doubled over the right-fielder’s head to drive in Makawe and double their lead.

With two outs in the third, UTSA tied it up on a pair of two-out RBI base-hits, but Trautwein surrendered just one hit the rest of the way and held the Roadrunners’ top hitter, Bailee Baldwin, without a hit in four at-bats.

North Texas regained the lead in the top of the fifth after back-to-back doubles by Lindsay and Lacy Gregory made it 3-2. The Mean Green got some insurance in the top of the final inning as Clark hit her second long ball to lead off the seventh.

Game Two

North Texas fell to UTSA in a slugfest in game two, which had a player on each team hit two home runs. Sam Rea went 2-for-3 in the loss with her third and fourth home runs of the week.

Madison Nelson (5-6) earned the win, despite giving up six runs on eight hits in her seven innings. Maria Priest (6-9) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs and a pair of home runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.

After a quiet first two frames, Sam Rea opened the scoring with a solo blast over the wall in center, h her fourth of the season and third of the week. Rea has hit a long ball in three of the team’s last five games.

UTSA took a 4-1 lead in the fifth after back-to-back home runs from Baldwin and Rylee Rodriguez. North Texas responded with five runs in the top of the sixth, headlined by Rea’s second home run of the game. Baldwin answered with a first-pitch grand slam off Trautwein, who entered the game for Priest.

North Texas wraps up the weekend series with a rubber match against UTSA at 1 p.m. Sunday.
