Softball Defeats No. 17 ULL

DENTON, Texas (3/13/11) - Senior Mallory Cantler posted two home runs to lead the North Texas softball team to an 8-5 victory against No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mean Green improves to 12-10 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Ragin' Cajuns fall to 20-3 and 2-1 in the conference. North Texas defeated ULL for the first time since 2007 and the first-time ever during a regular season conference series. NT was 0-12 against ULL prior to today's game and trails in the series, 28-2.

"Brittany Simmons was fantastic," said North Texas head coach T.J. Hubbard. "She really limited their hitting and holding that offense to five hits is pretty impressive. Mallory was huge with her two home runs. They were clutch and timely hits, and Curly (Grimes) behind the plate made some huge plays. Defensively, we had a good weekend. It was a good series all around. We were in all three games."

North Texas handed Shelbee Rodgers her first loss of the season. She pitched 3.1 innings and gave up five earned runs off six hits. Brittany Simmons picked up her sixth win of the season. She pitched a complete game, holding ULL to five runs off five hits.

Cantler gave North Texas a 1-0 lead in the third inning with her third home run of the season. ULL responded with four runs in the top of the fourth off an RBI single and a three-run homer.

North Texas came right back in the bottom of the inning with four runs to take the lead and the win. Mariza Martinez led off with a home run, her first of the season. Megan Rupp reached second base on an error by the pitcher and then advanced to third off a Lesley Hirsch bunt single. Brooke Foster brought home Rupp with an RBI single over the centerfielder's head. After Monica Hirsch grounded out, Cantler cleared the bases with her second home run of the day, giving North Texas a 6-4 lead.

After ULL added one run in the top of the sixth, Renae Bromley kept the Mean Green going with a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the inning. Cantler posted her third hit of the day with a double to put runners at second and third. Lisa Johnson brought in a run with a fielder's choice bunt that allowed Bromley to make it home safely.

North Texas then capped the game with a double steal with Johnson stealing second and Anna Barren stealing home to add an eighth run.

Cantler went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored and three RBI. She is the second player this season to hit two home runs in a game. The last time Cantler hit two home runs in a single game was last year against FIU. With her double today, she set the school record for doubles in a career with 43. She surpassed Susan Waters with 42.
