DENTON, Texas - The Texas Longhorns snapped the Mean Green softball team's four-game winning streak with a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday night at Lovelace Stadium. The Longhorns took the first game, 10-2, and held on for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
The Mean Green falls to 16-7 overall, while the Longhorns improve to 16-13.
The outcome came out the same, but the Mean Green played two very different games in the doubleheader. In the opening game, the Longhorns scored six runs in the first inning and knocked out the Mean Green's starter Ashley Kirk. The Longhorns outhit the Mean Green, 15-3.
"In the first game, Texas outpitched us, outhit us and outplayed us," said North Texas head coach Tracey Kee. "It hasn't happened to us often this year, but we knew we had to get ourselves together very quickly in order for it to not happen again. I thought in game two, I couldn't of asked more from Madison Thompson on the mound."
In the second game, North Texas outhit the Longhorns, 5-3, but left eight runners stranded on base. Down 2-0, North Texas scored a run in the seventh and then left the bases loaded.
"For us, this offense has been carrying this team all season," said Kee. "You are going to have games like this and sadly it happened to fall against Texas."
In the opening game, Lauren Poole pitched effectively in relief for the Mean Green but the bats never came alive to support her. Tiarra Davis held North Texas to just two runs off three hits. North Texas did not record a hit until the fourth inning when Dani Hoff led off with an infield single. Jordan Terry knocked in the team's first run with an RBI double that hit off the outfield fence.
Two walks loaded up the bases for the Mean Green, and freshman Kenzie Grimes drew a bases-loaded walk to score the second run. With the bases loaded again, Brooke Foster was robbed of at least one base when Lindsey Stephens made a tremendous catch at the wall to end the inning. The two Mean Green runs cut the lead to 7-2. North Texas managed just one more hit the rest of the game.
Madison Thompson picked up the loss in the second game despite holding the Longhorns to just two runs off three hits. The junior held Texas hitless through four innings of play. She gave up a two-out infield single in the fifth, and then Taylor Thom hit a deep double to right field that scored the first run of the game.
Stephens also hurt the Mean Green on offense, posting a solo home run to lead off the sixth for the Longhorns. The run proved to be the gamewinner.
