North Texas Loses Early Lead, Falls Victim to Sweep at UAB

March 8, 2015

BOX SCORE: UAB 5, North Texas 2

Season Statistics

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - With the series already clinched by UAB, North Texas aimed to salvage the weekend by knocking off the (RV) Blazers in Sunday's finale. As was the theme of the weekend, the Mean Green would jump out to an early lead only to watch it slip away for the third time, falling 5-2 to UAB.

Things looked bright for the Mean Green from the beginning, as North Texas executed a nearly textbook small-ball strategy in the top of the first inning to plate two runs. Sophomore Kelli Schkade led things off with a walk, followed by another to power-hitting Taylor Schoblocher. Senior Kat Strunk, even with a hot bat this weekend, laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners sixty feet closer to scoring. A Dani Hoff line-drive single and Mallory Land ground ball, both to the right side, would push North Texas out to a 2-0 advantage.

Unfortunately, the first inning would provide the only Mean Green offense of the afternoon and the Blazers would battle back in full force. In the bottom of the third inning with two outs, UAB would knot things up with back-to-back homerun blasts off of freshman pitcher Monique Garcia.

North Texas appeared to regain the lead in the top of the fifth when Land knocked a two-out double to the wall in right center with Dani Hoff on base. However, a good relay in from the outfield created a play at the plate and Hoff was tagged out for the final out of the inning.

The Blazers would immediately take advantage of the opportunity, taking the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning, scoring one run on two hits for a 3-2 advantage.

Garcia would allow UAB to add insurance in its last at bat by way of a two-run blast to deep centerfield, giving way to Stacey Underwood in the circle. The sophomore would record the final two outs of the inning, but the damage was complete. North Texas failed to cut into the 5-2 deficit in the top of the seventh, providing the final margin.
