Softball Wins Courtyard Classic

DENTON, Texas (3/6/11) - The North Texas softball team captured the 2011 Courtyard Classic with a 5-0 record on Sunday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green topped off the tournament with a 9-1 run-rule victory against Wichita State on Sunday.

The Mean Green improves to 11-6 this season and has won nine out of its last 10. Redshirt freshman Ashley Kirk was voted tournament MVP. She went 3-0 in the tournament with a 0.00 ERA. She struck out 22 batters in 16 innings of work.

Brittany Simmons picked up the win in the final game against Wichita State. The sophomore improves to 5-4 after allowing just one run in five innings of work.

Senior Mallory Cantler gave North Texas an early 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the first inning. Cantler was named to the all-tournament team after posting two home runs and six RBI in five games.

Lesley Hirsch led the Mean Green with four RBI on Sunday. She knocked in two runs in the second inning with a single, and then ended the game on a run-rule with a two-RBI double in the fifth.

In a start at second base, Hayley Siebman knocked in a run with a double in the third inning. Brooke Foster followed with an RBI single, and Monica Hirsch posted a sacrifice fly to give North Texas a 7-1 lead. Monica Hirsch was also named to the all-tournament team. She hit .385 in the tournament.

Mariza Martinez was the fourth North Texas player to be named to the all-tournament team. She batted .444 in the tournament. North Texas as a team hit a tournament-leading .351. The Mean Green also held the lowest ERA in the tournament at 0.55.

North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, March 9 when it faces Missouri State at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader at home.
