Softball Falls To Tulsa In Championship Game

Tulsa, Okla. (3/4/12) -The Tulsa softball team defeated North Texas, 6-1, in the championship game of the Hyatt Downtown Tulsa Tournament at Collins Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Mean Green falls to 8-10, while Tulsa improves to 14-3. North Texas posted a 3-2 record at the Tulsa tournament with both of its losses coming against the Golden Hurricane.

Aimee Creger (6-1) closed down the Mean Green offense for most of the game. She allowed one run off one hit in five innings of work. Creger struck out eight North Texas batters.

Tulsa outhit the Mean Green, 9-4. The Mean Green's lone run came in the fourth inning when Caitlin Grimes posted her fifth home run of the season. The senior hit four home runs in the tournament and knocked in eight RBI. Overall, she is tied for the team lead with five home runs and is first on the squad with 16 RBI.

Skylar Swanson gave Tulsa an early lead in the first inning with a two-run homer. Grimes cut the lead to one run in the fourth before the Golden Hurricane used two doubles to knock in four runs to extend its lead.

The Mean Green threatened in the sixth when it loaded the bases, but Tulsa turned a double play to end the inning.

Lauren Poole (2-2) took the loss for the Mean Green. She pitched three innings and allowed four runs off six hits. Brittany Simmons pitched in relief, allowing two runs off four hits in three innings of work.

Grimes led the Mean Green in the tournament with a .571 batting average on eight hits and eight RBI. Brooke Foster followed with six hits, and Maddelyn Fraley and Lesley Hirsh followed with five hits each. The Mean Green hit .288 as a team and hit nine home runs in the tournament.

North Texas returns to action on Saturday, March 10 when it opens conference play against Louisiana-Lafayette on the road.
