Kirk Strikes Out 14 In Mean Green Win

San Marcos, Texas (3/1/13) - North Texas pitcher Ashley Kirk tied her own school record with 14 strikeouts in the 7-3 win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday at Bobcat Stadium. Brooke Foster knocked in five runs in the 7-5 nightcap win against Texas State.
North Texas improves to 9-9 overall and goes 2-0 on day one of the CenturyLink Classic on the campus of Texas State. The Mean Green is now 2-0 this season against both the Islanders and the Bobcats.
The Mean Green offense came out strong in both games. North Texas posted a season-high 11 hits in the opening win against Islanders and recorded two home runs in the nightcap. Foster tied a school record by knocking in five RBI against Texas State.
Kirk (4-3) struck out 14 batters in seven innings of work against the Islanders. She allowed one earned runs off five hits. She tied her own record for strikeouts in a single game. The junior has set that record three times in her career.
The Mean Green offense supported Kirk with a season-high 11 hits. Jackie Miller led the offense with a 3-hit performance, including a two-run homer.
The Islanders scored first after Kirk gave up a lead-off walk. The runner later scored off a passed ball.
North Texas responded with three runs in the second inning. Miller led off the inning with single. She later moved to third after two walks. Foster knocked in the first run with a single down the right-field line. Jordan Terry gave North Texas the lead with a two-RBI single.
Miller added to the lead with a two-run homer in the third. It was her second home run of the season.
The Islanders added runs in the third and sixth innings off a Mean Green error and a solo home run, but North Texas kept piling on the hits. Dani Hoff sealed the win with an RBI single in the sixth. Terry scored from second after doubling to get on base.
Terry didn't wait long to start the scoring in the win against Texas State. She hit a two-run homer in the first inning to put North Texas ahead, 2-0. After the Bobcats knocked in a run in the bottom of the inning, Foster extended the lead with a three-run homer.
Foster knocked in her fourth run of the game in the fourth inning with a double. The run gave North Texas a 6-1 lead. The run proved to be crucial as Courtney Harris hit a grand slam off starter Tori Bice in the fifth.
Foster posted her fifth RBI in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to seal the 7-5 win. The junior is one of seven North Texas players to record five RBI in a single game.
Brittany Simmons picked up her third save of the season, holding Texas State scoreless the final two innings. Bice earned her third win of the season, pitching five innings and giving up five runs off four hits.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday, March 2 when it faces Purdue at 10 a.m. and Texas State at 3 p.m.
