Softball Comes Up Short Against No. 9 Baylor

Waco, Texas (2/26/12) - The North Texas softball team threatened in the seventh inning but came up just short in a 2-1 loss to No. 9 Baylor in the Texas Shootout on Sunday afternoon.

The Mean Green falls to 5-7, while Baylor improves to 12-2. The Bears take third place in the tournament with a 4-1 record, while North Texas takes fourth with a 1-4 mark.

North Texas scored a run in the seventh inning to cut the Baylor lead to one run, and had two runners on base, but a strikeout ended the threat.

Baylor took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning off a fielding error, a wild pitch and sacrifice fly. Delaney Guy reached base on an error and later scored off a wild pitch. Sydney Wilson knocked home the second run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Bears pitching shut down the Mean Green offense following the first inning. Megan Rupp led off the game with a single, and Lesley Hirsch and Lisa Johnson both reached base on fielder's choices. North Texas would not reach base again until the seventh inning when the Mean Green was aided by three errors.

Johnson scored the Mean Green's lone run off Baylor errors in the seventh. She reached base on a fielding error and then advanced around the bases with two more Baylor mistakes. North Texas left two runners stranded on base in the seventh.

Courtney Repka picked up the win for the Bears. She pitched four innings of relief, allowing one unearned run off one hit.

Brittany Simmons (4-2) took the loss. She pitched 3.1 innings and allowed two runs off four hits. Neither run was earned.

The Bears outhit the Mean Green, 5-2.

North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 29 when it faces nationally-ranked Oklahoma at home at 6 p.m.
