Kirk And Poole Combine For Shutout In Win

San Marcos, Texas (2/21/13) - Junior Ashley Kirk and sophomore Lauren Poole combined for a four-hit shutout, leading the North Texas softball team to a 1-0 victory against Texas State on Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium in the first game of the Texas Shootout.

Kirk (2-3) won her second game of the season, pitching six innings and allowing three hits. She struck out six and walked six. The junior earned her victory, pitching out of jams in the second, third and fourth inning.

Poole picked up her first career save with her relief effort.  She relieved Kirk in the seventh inning and forced two groundouts and a fly out to seal the win.

Jordan Terry recorded the first hit for the Mean Green to lead off the third inning. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Schoblocher and then moved to third on a Jackie Miller groundout. Lesley Hirsch ended up with the game-winning hit, scoring Terry from third with an infield single.

The Mean Green loaded the bases in the fourth inning but a fly out retired the side. North Texas also had runners in scoring position in the fifth but was unable to find that timely hit.

The Bobcats stranded 14 runners in the game. Each team posted just four hits. The difference came down to Hirsh's hit in the third inning.
