DENTON, Texas - The Mean Green softball team continued its winning ways in day one of the Texas Shootout on Thursday, notching victories over Texas State, 1-0, and Abilene Christian, 12-8.
With the win over ACU, North Texas extended its win streak to an all-time program high eight games and stayed undefeated at Lovelace Stadium with a perfect 7-0 record.
"I thought we did a good job of getting that first run on that board early so Ashley could settle in," head coach Tracey Kee said. "Credit to her, she was in very good command that entire game and had some good strikeouts. Defensively, we made some plays."
Senior Ashley Kirk led the Mean Green to a one-run victory over Texas State in the first contest of the day with a one-hit, complete-game shutout. Kirk struck out nine Bobcats en route to her fifth win of the season.
"I have to give all the credit to God and to my team," Kirk said. "They were behind me the whole time and never once let up. My defense kept us in that game and that is the reason we won that game."
Junior Dani Hoff provided the only offense of the game for either team in the first inning with an RBI double that scored Spencer Ferrell, who tripled in the at-bat prior.
The North Texas bats came alive in game two. The Mean Green staved off an ACU Wildcats rally and won by four. Hoff continued her big day at the plate with two RBI in the game. Sophomore Taylor Schoblocher also plated three runs on three hits.
"We knew that we needed to come out aggressively, and I was pleased with our offense in that game," coach Kee said. "I thought the game was ugly defensively, and we have to turn around and execute better tomorrow."
Senior Lauren Poole earned the win, going 4.2 innings and giving up two runs to move to 2-1 on the season.
The Mean Green was active on the bases as well with seven stolen bases, going seven-for-eight on the night overall.
The Texas Shootout continues on Friday, Feb. 21, with NT set to face Prairie View A&M at 5 p.m. Times are subject to change as four games will be played prior to the Mean Green's scheduled showdown with Prairie View.
