North Texas Upsets No. 23 Baylor On The Road
Mean Green Secure 3-2 Extra-Inning Victory
WACO, Texas – It took extra innings to decide four of the previous five meetings between North Texas and Baylor. Sunday was no different as it took eight innings for North Texas to secure a 3-2 victory over Baylor at Getterman Stadium.
“First of all, we have a healthy dose of respect for the Baylor program,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “We were calm and our team settled in early. Our players weren’t intimidated and they played a great game.”
In extra innings, senior Kelli Schkade laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving freshman Camille Grahmann to third. Lacy Gregory delivered another clutch single up the middle to score Grahmann, the eventual winning run.
The Lady Bears had one final opportunity in the bottom of the eighth, but Taylor Ellis didn’t tag on Ari Hawkin’s deep fly out to right and senior righty Stacey Underwood closed the door, getting Maddison Kettler to ground out to second, ending the game and securing the 3-2 upset victory.
The victory marked the fourth time North Texas (4-5) has knocked-off a nationally-ranked Baylor (6-3) team on the road under Kee.
Underwood (3-2) threw a complete game, going 8 innings, allowing two runs – one earned -- limiting the Lady Bears to seven hits with three strikeouts opposed to one walk. Underwood lowered her earned run average to 3.37 on the young season.
“For Stacey, it’s all about composure and confidence,” Kee said. “When she has those two things, she can be incredibly tough as a pitcher. She has that edge and can be difficult to hit.”
BU’s Kelsee Selman (4-2) took the loss, tossing a complete game herself.
North Texas wasted little time in the game, putting two runs on the board against Selman in the opening inning. Schkade and Lacy Gregory led off the game with back-to-back singles to left and both came around to score three batters later when sophomore Harley Perella lined a two-out double to the right-center field gap, giving North Texas a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Bears capitalized on Schkade’s throwing error in the bottom of the first inning, as Jessie Scroggins reached on the miscue and later scored on a 4-3 putout to cut into the Mean Green lead.
BU had its chance to tie the game at two in the third, but Underwood pitched around singles by Scroggins and Kyla Walker, getting the next two Lady Bears to pop up and Hawkins to ground into a fielder’s choice, ending the inning.
The Mean Green had a scoring opportunity of their own in the fifth after Grahmann worked a 13-pitch at bat, reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop, and Schkade singling to right to move Grahmann into scoring position, but Lacy Gregory and Nicole Ochotnicki couldn’t bring them around, stranding two runners on base.
Baylor tied the game in the sixth after Underwood issued a leadoff walk to Shelby Friudenberg. Riley Browder relived Friudenberg as a pinch runner and later scored on a single up the middle by Kettler.
The Mean Green finished the Getterman Classic with a 3-2 record, defeating Lamar twice to go along with Sunday’s victory.
“This was a boost of confidence for this young team,” Kee said. “They didn’t play like a young team against Baylor, but we know this isn’t the pinnacle of our season. We know we need to build on this weekend, but we have some things we need to clean up as well.”
- Kelli Schkade had a multi-hit game against Baylor, her fifth of the weekend.
- Harley Perella’s two RBI brings her season total to five, which is second-best on the team.
- Camille Grahmann’s 13-pitch at-bat in the fifth was the longest of the season for a North Texas player.
- Lacy Gregory has now hit safely in eight-straight games and has reached base in all nine games of the season.
- The extra-inning affair marks the second of the season for North Texas (UMass Lowell 2/11).
- This was the first extra-inning victory of the season for the Mean Green.
- North Texas struck out a season-high nine times against Baylor.
- Lacy Gregory recorded her team-leading 10th RBI.
- Bailey Thompson ran down several would-be hits against Baylor to keep the Lady Bears off the board.
- North Texas is 7-3 in the Getterman Classic over the past two seasons.
