Mean Green's Rally Falls Short

DENTON, Texas (2/18/11) - The North Texas softball team rallied in the seventh inning but came up just short as the Mean Green fell to No. 21 Nebraska, 4-2, on day one of the Sleep Inn Classic on Friday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mean Green falls to 2-5 this season and 0-1 in the series with the Huskers. Nebraska also defeated Tennessee Tech on Friday and improved to 7-1.

Down 4-1 headed into the seventh inning, North Texas loaded the bases with no outs on an error and two singles. After a foul out, Megan Rupp knocked in a run with a sacrifice pop fly. The junior led the Mean Green with two hits and two RBI. A flyout ended out the rally for the Mean Green.

Nebraska used a four-run third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Taylor Edwards hit a three-run homer to help the Huskers get ahead.

Rupp plated the Mean Green's first run with an RBI double in the fifth inning. Monica Hirsch scored from first after reaching base on a walk.

Brittany Simmons (1-4) picked up the loss for the Mean Green. She pitched seven innings and gave up three runs off eight hits. She started off the game by forcing putouts for six of the first seven batters.

Nebraska outhit the Mean Green, 8-4. Ashley Hagemann allowed just one earned run off four hits for Nebraska. She struck out six Mean Green batters.

Nebraska won both of its games in first-day action of the Sleep Inn Classic. Tennessee Tech picked up a win, and Centenary lost both of its games.

North Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 20 when it faces Tennessee Tech at 5:30 pm.
