Grimes Homers In Loss To Northwestern

Tempe, Ariz. (2/13/11) -The North Texas softball team finished play in the ASU Kajikawa Classic with an 8-4 loss to Northwestern on Sunday morning.

The Mean Green falls to 2-4 this season. NT is now 0-1 in the series against Northwestern. Northwestern improves to 3-2.

North Texas tied the game twice, but Northwestern scored a combined six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overpower the Mean Green. Caitlin Grimes led North Texas offensively with two hits and two RBI.

Brittany Simmons (1-2) took the loss for the Mean Green. She gave up six earned runs off 11 hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Grimes tied the game in the third inning, 1-1, with an RBI double. Mallory Cantler scored on the play after reaching base with a walk. After Northwestern regained the lead with a home run in the fourth, the Mean Green tied the game for a second time off two errors in the bottom of the inning.

A three-RBI double by Northwestern in the fifth inning put Northwestern ahead for good. North Texas added solo runs in the sixth and seventh inning, including a home run by Grimes, but it was not enough to overtake the Wildcats.

The Mean Green returns to home to host the Sleep Inn Classic on Feb. 18-20.
