Softball Falls To Oregon And Oregon State

Tempe, Ariz. (2/12/11) -The North Texas softball team held leads against both Oregon and Oregon State but was unable to hold off the two Pac-10 schools in the ASU Kajikawa Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Mean Green lost its first game to Oregon State, 3-2, and then fell, 12-4, against No. 14 Oregon.

The Mean Green falls to 2-3 this season. NT is now 0-2 in the series against Oregon State and 0-1 against the Ducks. Oregon and Oregon State both improve to 4-0 in 2011.

Against Oregon, Mariza Martinez gave North Texas a 2-1 lead in the second inning with a pinch-hit two-RBI double. The Ducks scored first in the top of the inning off a Mean Green error.

Oregon tied the game in the top of the third with an RBI double, but Lisa Johnson hit her first home run of the season to give the lead back to the Mean Green, 3-2.

The Ducks then exploded for 10 runs in three innings to take the six-inning run-rule game. Oregon used three home runs and two doubles to get past the Mean Green.

Ashley Kirk took the loss for the Mean Green, falling to 1-1 on the season. She gave up seven earned runs off 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work.

North Texas scored two runs in the fifth inning against Oregon State to take a 2-1 lead. The Beavers tied the game in the sixth and then scored the game-winning run in the seventh to win the game.

The Mean Green rounds out play in the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday, Feb. 13 when it faces Northwestern at 10 a.m.
