Softball Goes 1-1 On Day Two

Tempe, Ariz. (2/11/11) - Redshirt freshman Ashley Kirk picked up her first career win in the circle, and junior Caitlin Grimes hit a three-run homer to lead the North Texas softball team to a 6-0 win against Appalachian State in the ASU Kajikawa Classic on Friday afternoon. The Mean Green lost its second game of the day, 5-2, at the hands of No. 18 Stanford.

The Mean Green improves to 2-1 this season. NT is now 1-0 in the series against Appalachian State and 0-1 against Stanford.

In her first career appearance, Kirk pitched five shutout innings and allowed just two hits against Appalachian State. She also struck out eight batters. Mallory Cantler also made her collegiate debut in relief of Kirk. She pitched two shutout innings, allowing just one hit.

On the offensive side in the first game, Grimes sealed the win with a three-run homer in the four-run fourth inning. Megan Rupp and Maddelyn Fraley also knocked in runs for the Mean Green.

Lesley Hirsch started things off in the third inning with a double. She later scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. Rupp knocked in the second run of the inning with an RBI single.

Lisa Johnson and Cantler led off the fourth with back-to-back singles. In her first start in a Mean Green uniform, Fraley doubled down the right-field line, scoring Johnson. With her first hit of the season, Grimes hit one out of the park to extend the Mean Green lead to 6-0.

North Texas scored first against Stanford but was not able to hold off the California team. Courtney Bradshaw knocked in the first run with an RBI single, but Stanford quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first.

Stanford took the lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single and then added three insurance runs in the fifth off three hits. North Texas was only able to add one more run in the sixth with an RBI single by Johnson. Grimes led off the inning with a double.

Brittany Simmons took the loss in the game and falls to 1-1. She pitched four innings and allowed two runs off five hits.

Stanford outhit the Mean Green, 9-7. The Mean Green left six runners stranded on base.
