Softball Comes Up Short Against No. 7 Texas

Austin, TX (2/10/13) - The Mean Green softball team scored first and rallied late, but No.7 Texas held on to defeat North Texas, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at McCombs Field.

The Mean Green falls to 3-2, while Texas improves to 5-0. North Texas finishes second in the Texas Classic, posting wins against Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Memphis. The Mean Green lost twice to No. 7 Texas.

Ashley Kirk (1-1) picked up her first loss of the season. She pitched six innings and gave up five runs off six hits. She struck out five batters. All five runs, four of which were earned, were scored in the second inning. Outside of the second inning, Kirk allowed just one hit and three baserunners.

Blaire Luna (2-0) won her second game of the tournament. After a shaky first inning, she shut down the Mean Green for four innings, striking out six of the 12 batters. She gave up two runs off two hits and a walk in the sixth inning. She finished with 14 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

For the fourth time this weekend, North Texas scored first. The Mean Green scored two runs in the top of the first inning off two hits, three walks and a wild pitch. Texas took back the lead in the second inning with five runs, including a three-run homer. North Texas rallied in the sixth inning with two runs but came up a run short in the end.

Lesley Hirsch led off with a single to left field, moved to second on a walk to Paige Kisling and advanced to third on a pick-off attempt to first. Jordan Terry brought Hirsch home with an RBI single to center field. Taylor Schoblocher walked to load the bases, and Kisling scored from third off a wild pitch.

Texas responded in the second with five runs. After North Texas gave up a single and a fielder's choice, Mandy Ogle hit a three-run homer to left field to put Texas ahead, 3-2. The Longhorns added to the lead with two RBI singles.

Dani Hoff started a two-out rally in the sixth inning with her second walk of the game. Madison Tierney ran out a dribbler to the second baseman for a hit, and Karly Williams knocked in a run with a single up the middle. Tierney scored the second run off a fielding error by the Longhorns. Luna struck out Kisling to end the Mean Green threat.

Terry reached base in the seventh on a hit by pitch but, Luna struck out the final two batters to seal the win for the Longhorns.

Texas outhit the Mean Green, 6-4. North Texas left eight runners stranded.

North Texas returns to action next weekend when it hosts the Lovelace Invitational.
